Why the Feeling You’re Waiting For Shows Up After You Begin

By Dr. John Maurice M.C., C.T.C., M.M.C.

I want to tell you something that took me a long time to learn the hard way.

There was a season in my life when I was waiting to feel ready. Waiting to feel confident. Waiting to feel like I finally had enough. Enough preparation, enough certainty, enough evidence that I wouldn’t fall. And the truth be told there are still times that I feel that way.

But I stop and I think, I look back and take inventory over my life and realize that I have already survived so many things, seven spine surgeries. As a child I had moved through nine schools in twelve years, never putting down roots, never quite feeling like I belonged anywhere. And still I was waiting.

That is when I understood something that changed everything for me.

The feeling you are waiting for does not arrive before you begin. It is built by the fact that you began.

I am not speaking in theory. I am speaking from the floor of my own life. And I am telling you intentionality progressive movement is the medicine you need.

Why People Keep Waiting

The human mind prefers certainty.

It wants to know the outcome before it commits to the process. When the outcome is unclear, hesitation moves in and questions begin to form.

“What if I fail?” “What if I embarrass myself?” “What if I am not ready?”

Those questions are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are signs that you are standing at the edge of something new. And new things always feel uncomfortable at first.

The problem is that most people interpret that discomfort as a signal to wait longer. To prepare more. To gather more information before beginning.

But here is what I know from years of walking alongside people in transition.

Life rarely rewards perfect preparation. Life responds to movement.

The Truth About Confidence

Confidence is not an emotion you suddenly discover. It is not a personality trait that some people are born with and others are not.

Confidence is evidence.

It is the evidence your mind gathers after you take action and realize you survived the experience. Each time you do something difficult and come through it, your brain records that moment. It quietly updates the story you carry about who you are and what you are capable of.

That evidence accumulates.

And eventually something shifts. You stop asking yourself if you can do it

You simply begin doing it.

Small Actions Reshape Identity

One of the biggest myths about personal growth is that transformation requires a dramatic leap. It does not.

Most meaningful change begins with very small decisions repeated consistently.

A conversation you finally decide to have. A habit you practice every morning. A commitment to show up again tomorrow even when today did not feel perfect.

These moments may not look impressive from the outside. But inside the mind, something powerful is happening. Each action rewrites the internal story you carry about yourself.

And over time, that story becomes identity.

Spanish Word of the Day

Valentía

Courage.

Courage is Not the absence of fear. Courage is the decision to move forward while fear is still present.

Your Bridge Exercise This Week

Think about one area of your life where you have been waiting to feel confident before beginning.

It might be a conversation. A project. A decision that has quietly been sitting in the background of your life.

Now ask yourself a different question.

Instead of asking, “When will I feel confident enough to start?” Ask

“What small step could I take today that would begin building confidence?”

Then take that step.

You do not need the entire path today. You only need the next move.

This Week’s Identity Affirmation

I do not wait for confidence.

I build it.

Each step forward strengthens the person I am becoming.

Decoding With Dr. John Maurice

Let us look at what is actually happening beneath the surface because the science behind this is more precise than most people realize.

When you take action despite uncertainty, three regions of your brain are working together in real time.

The Prefrontal Cortex — your Architect of Reality. This is the region responsible for planning, decision-making, and choosing movement over hesitation. Every time you take a step forward, you are strengthening this region’s ability to override fear and choose intention.

The Anterior Midcingulate Cortex — your Warrior of Obedience. This is the region activated when you do hard things especially things you do not feel like doing. Research shows it actually grows when you push through resistance. That is not metaphor. That is measurable neurological change.

The Amygdala — your Fear Filter. This is the region that generates the discomfort, the hesitation, the “what if I fail” signal. It is not your enemy. It is doing its job protecting you from the unknown. But when you move forward anyway, you are essentially teaching your amygdala that the unknown is survivable. Over time, its alarm softens.

Here is what that means for you practically.

The same situation that once felt paralyzing begins to feel familiar. The fear does not disappear but your relationship to it changes. And that is the moment confidence appears.

Not before the journey.

But because the journey has already begun.

That is not inspiration. That is how your brain actually works.

And now you know.

I thought that I would be celebrated, but Growth rarely arrives with fireworks.

More often it appears quietly through the decisions you repeat day after day.

A step today. Another step tomorrow. And then another.

Until one day you realize the person you are becoming feels stronger, clearer, and more capable than the person you once believed yourself to be.

As always if you have read my blog before you know that I believe in you, not because believing in people is something I say, but because I have lived it and I am the living proof that people who refuse to stay down eventually rise. I was that person. I have watched and helped others become that person. And now it is your turn.

That’s why I believe in you and now with you believing more in yourself, and with you learning and making the internal decision each day to become better by taking the time and steps, I know that I will see you on the other side of your desired reality in no time.

Until next time.
